If you happen to populate this highly money-conscious country of diverse colors & culture and have ever been involved in the dilemma of choosing a new automobile, you are well versed with the prestige that best mileage cars are associated with. To put it forth in a much more familiar & eloquent manner -‘Kitna deti hai?’ is one of India’s favorite questions to ask before considering any car.

We have always nursed a soft spot for ‘value for money’ deals and what says that better than our fuel efficient automobiles which can give running costs as low as Rs 3 per km (we aren’t making this stuff up). So bringing to you cars that should undoubtedly have the approval of every money conscious parent or spouse, here’s the list of the 5 best mileage cars that our country saw this year:-

1. Maruti Suzuki Ciaz SHVS – 28.09 km/l

The car that successfully carved out a niche for Maruti Suzuki’s entry into the mid-sized sedan genre, the Ciaz his given stiff competition to its more established, more powerful & more expensive counterparts -Hyundai Verna & Honda City.

Competing against the likes of Honda City & Hyundai Verna, the Maruti Ciaz gives an average of 28.09 km/l

The SHVS which stands for Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki & uses features like an ISG (Integrated Started Generator), a larger battery and a hybrid braking system. All of this serves to store the engine’s power when it is running without load i.e. while going downhill or coasting. The car gives 89 bhp of power & 200 Nm of torque. As a result the new Ciaz SHVS gives an ARAI approved fuel efficient mileage of 28.09 km/l, an appreciable upgrade from the old Ciaz’s 26.91 km/l.

2. Maruti Celerio Diesel – 27.62 km/l

The new Celerio Diesel entered the market with a new AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) gearbox mated with a 2-cylinder 793 cc engine, the smallest of its kind in India. The all aluminium cylinder head empowers the vehicle with a paltry 47 bhp of power and 125 Nm torque. The AMT gives you the option of clutch free driving, which is a boon on the overcrowded, clogged streets of our country.

Maruti Celerio with a mileage of 27.62 km/l is your ideal hatchback for zigzagging around city roads

With an ARAI certified fuel efficiency of 27.62 km/l, you won’t be bothered by the NVH levels of the car up to the mid-RPM range. However, the small engine does seem to be a bit inadequate once you press the pedal past 80km/hr.

3. Maruti Baleno Diesel – 27.39 km/l

Maruti Suzuki seems to have gotten it’s formula for selling the most cars in the country on point. The Japanese automaker’s third car on the best mileage cars list – the new Baleno has definitely overshadowed it’s old counterpart as far as popularity is concerned – the in demand hatchback had a 6 month waiting period on it.

Maruti Baleno not only offers a impressive mileage of 27.39 km/l, but also exudes a certain grace and class that the Swift lacks.

It shares its engine with that of the Swift which delivers 74 bhp of power and 190 Nm of torque. But thanks to the Maruti subscribed dieting plan, the Baleno is 75 kgs lighter than it’s counterpart due to which it gives a much higher fuel efficiency of 27.39 km/l. The car is giving HyundaI i20 elite which used to dominate the luxury hatchback segment stiff competition.

With a new stylish body, the Honda City inspired headlights, a multitude of other physical changes & not only the cherry but the entire creamy layer at the top of the cake- the reduced pricing of the car & the introduction of a diesel variant, Jazz has made it’s presence known in the luxury hatchback segment.

Honda Jazz’s reincarnation has received a much warmer response, aided by it’s mileage of 27.3 km/l and reduced prices.

The only car on the best mileage cars list to feature a 6-speed gearbox, it has the same 1.5 liter i-DTEC diesel engine that powers Amaze and gives 99 bhp of power and 200 Nm of torque. Due to 8% taller gear ratios as compared to the Honda Amaze, it gives the impressive ARAI certified fuel efficiency of 27.3 km/l. However, the NVH levels of the Jazz are such that you won’t be left in any illusions about it’s diesel fuel type.

5. Tata Tiago – 27.28 km/l

Tata’s hope for revival in the entry level hatchback segment, the Tiago heralds Tata’s entry to the best mileage cars list. Tiago has also seen Tata making fundamental changes in design, with the designers finally taking the cue from people’s aversion to the design of Indica and taking steps to distance themselves from the same. Starting from a mere 3.20 lacks, this car is expected to give stiff competition to the likes of Celerio, Beat etc.

With a mileage of 27.28 km/l, Tata has really done a great job with the all new suave Tiago

What it marginally lacks in mileage as compared to the Celerio, it more than makes up for it in the power department. The 1.05 liter Revotorq power plant supplies 67 bhp of power and 140 Nm of torque. The ARAI approved 27.28 km/l mileage tag on the diesel variant makes it seem that Tata might finally bring home the bacon or in our case bring home the ‘roti’ with this one.
